Baseline Tuning Forks

Details

The Baseline Medical Tuning Forks are used in testing hearing, such as the Weber and Rinne tests, as well as the diagnosis of nervous system disorders. Available with or without weights at the ends of the prongs, Tuning Forks are ideal for hospitals and clinics.

There is no difference between the tone created with the weighted versus unweighted Medical Tuning Fork. The difference lies in the intensity of the vibration. The tines with the weights on them will move more and therefore more vibration is translated down to the handle. This means that when the handle of the weighted tuning fork is placed on the body, the patient will physically feel the vibration more than they would if an unweighted tuning for were used.

Therefore, the weighted prongs can be used for the diagnosing and monitoring associated with vibratory sensation, while the unweighted prongs are associated more with hearing evaluation. The shorter the prongs, the higher the frequency, so weights cannot be put on forks below 512 cps.
